Description
Some accused her of having »lost her way«. Sofia Gubaidulina, like Beethoven in his »Eroica« symphony, was looking for »new ways« in dark times. However, Gidon Kremer sensed the genius of the Russian composer and made her – and her Violin Concerto »Offertorium« – known to the world.
The 1980 premiere in Vienna was a sensational success, bestowing upon her a previously undreamt of freedom. In 2006/07, she composed her Second Violin Concerto »In tempus praesens« (dedicated to and first performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter). The title of the work reveals much about its theme: the phenomenon of the moment. In the moment and in its perception as a moment, it seems as if the freedom of existence is revealed: »I sometimes have a mysterious sound in my head that is completely indefinable, but it is as if the whole work appears simultaneously ...« (Sofia Gubaidulina).
