Fatoumata Diawara

Songwriter, singer and actress – Fatoumata Diawara from Mali is one of today's greatest all-round talents in Western Africa. Her enthralling Sahel folk rock, which has its roots in the Wassoulou region, highlights the social and political problems of her country. But her vocal poetry also has a personal slant at all times, reflecting a truly distressing life story.
Circumcision and flight to Europe to escape an arranged marriage: Diawara has dealt with her own fate vividly in a variety of impressive songs. Based in Paris, she launched an international career, working with big names like Herbie Hancock, soul man Bobby Womack and the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, and acting in the films »Timbuktu« and »Mali Blues«. Now her committed songwriting culminates more powerfully and rockier than ever in »Fenfo«, a cycle about crisis-ridden Mali, women's dignity and the fate of migrants.
