Description

Oh, the exquisite pain of love! »Ne me quitte pas«, Jacques Brel pleads in what is perhaps his most famous chanson – »Don’t leave me! Let’s forget – for all can be forgotten«. The legendary Belgian singer-songwriter, whose performances were generally seen through a haze of cigarette smoke, died in 1978. Hamburg’s Ensemble Resonanz pays tribute to Jacques Brel with a very special programme which – as so often with this creative and innovative string orchestra – happily ignores conventional stylistic boundaries. Among the guest artists who have been invited to perform are Brel’s compatriot Jeroen Berwaerts, solo trumpeter with the NDR Symphony Orchestra and a trained jazz singer, who was raised on the songs of Brel. On the programme is also music by Brel’s »pre-pre-precursor«, the French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, and by one of Brel´s greatest fans, the Austrian composer HK Gruber, himself a chansonnier who has recorded Kurt Weill songs with Max Raabe & his Palast Orchester.
