Young highflyer

As the youngest participant and the first Canadian in the history of the competition, the 17-year-old Kevin Chen caused a small sensation at the 2022 Concours de Genève by walking off with first prize, as well as no fewer than six special awards. Among these was the Young Audience Prize, which is awarded by school and college students.

The pianist, a Calgary native, already drew attention at the age of eight when CBC Music voted him one of the 30 most exciting musicians under 30: at the time, he had just made his orchestral debut and also written his first compositions. Then, at the end of March 2023, he won the legendary Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv. »The music simply flows out of him,« said his erstwhile piano teacher in an interview. And one believes her without further ado when she adds that she has never had such a remarkably talented pupil as Kevin.
