At the court of the Sun King

»The Sun King«, »Louis the Great«, »the God-given«: where Louis XIV was concerned, no one was sparing with superlatives – neither his contemporaries, nor posterity. The great French monarch is to this day the embodiment of an absolute ruler, and the lavish splendour of his court is legendary. During his reign (1642 – 1675), France was one of the leading political powers in Europe. To make the country’s importance clear, Louis indulged in representation and display on a massive scale, triggering a period of cultural ascendancy in Baroque France that was unmatched in the country’s history.

The monarch was a particularly keen sponsor of music, as it offered the opportunity for prestigious display like hardly any other art form. Legendary status is enjoyed to this day by the »Concert de la nuit«, where Louis himself introduced the grand finale as the radiant sun. In the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall the French ensemble Correspondances under the baton of Sébastien Daucé invites the audience to experience the world of the »Sun King«.
