To this day, Paul Dukas is best-known for his work »The Sorcerer's Apprentice«. But there are other things of interest in the Parisian composer's oeuvre, as is shown by the prelude to Act Three of his opera »Ariadne and Bluebeard«. This enigmatic and radiant music from the turn of the century need not fear comparison with the works of Dukas's contemporaries.
Before the orchestra performs the considerably better-known Fourth Symphony by Gustav Mahler, himself once a resident of Hamburg, which is seen as one of his sunniest works, chief conductor Sylvain Cambreling turns his attention to the Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans. With the latter's »Trakl Lieder«, Cambreling once again shows his fine feeling and expertise for modern music.
