Fascinating sound worlds: tonight's concert opens with a work by French composer Henri Dutilleux (d. 2013), who described himself as »a composer of colours«. As unconventional as any painter, he made effective use of his magical palette in his Cello Concerto, which had its first performance in 1970. The Cello Concerto came to enjoy immense popularity; it was written for Mstislav Rostropovich and is based on a poem from Baudelaire's famous »Fleurs du Mal« entitled »Tout un monde lointain« (An Entirely Distant World). Dutilleux created a dreamy, almost unreal world where the listener can stroll through a labyrinth of memories made up of motifs and chords.
