The Power of Fate

Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most traditional orchestras in the USA (only the New York Philharmonic is older). With its long-standing chief conductor Andris Nelsons, it presents two major orchestral classics at the Elbphilharmonie, in which the orchestra can fully unleash its power of sound.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony opens the evening with the famous »fate motif«: »ta-ta-ta-taaa.« No other composer is able to express so much emotion in so few notes and to turn them into such a gripping symphony. In the Beethoven year marking the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, Andris Nelsons conducts all piano concertos in several concerts – with Lang Lang as soloist – and performs his greatest symphonies.

For the concert in the Grand Hall, Nelsons has chosen Stravinsky’s »Firebird« alongside Beethoven’s Symphony of Fate – a monumental orchestral work whose richness of tone colors comes into its own ideally in the acoustics of the Elbphilharmonie – especially with an orchestra like the one from Boston, which is known worldwide for its perfection and balance.
