Movement in music
Although it’s customary to sit still during a concert, it’s a fact that music is movement. Jakub Hrůša and his Bamberger Symphoniker seem to have adopted this as their motto when they were drawing up the programme for this concert. The top orchestra and its conductor not only chose to play two repertoire milestones: both works are also pretty much synonymous with dance and movement.
This obviously applies to Beethoven’s marvellous Seventh Symphony, which Richard Wagner aptly described as the »apotheosis of dance«. And it’s no less true of Stravinsky’s seminal ballet »Le sacre du printemps« (The Rite of Spring), which triggered one of the greatest scandals in music history at the premiere, and captivates today’s audiences with its thrilling rhythms and dramatic intensity.
