Good tidings times three

Freshly sworn in as Thomaskantor (musical director of the Thomanerchor) in Leipzig, Johann Sebastian Bach was full of energy in 1723 and composed among other things the »Magnificat«, a cantata of praise for the Advent season, for his new choir. Shortly after the Annunciation by the archangel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary tells her cousin the good news of her pregnancy with the Saviour. This message sounds particularly joyful when performed by Vox Luminis, an outstanding early music ensemble.

Founded in 2004 by Lionel Meunier, this international group based in Belgium brings together singers and musicians of the highest calibre – the former can be heard both in the choir and in solo parts. Meunier, who sings bass and leads the ensemble (in instrumental projects together with the concertmaster), is particularly fond of the German-language repertoire.

In keeping with the Advent season, the magnificently orchestrated »Magnificat« is preceded by two other Christmas cantatas by Bach and his contemporary Telemann, who also applied for the position of Thomaskantor but withdrew his application prematurely.
