Description

The list of children following in the footsteps of their musician parents is long. Yet only a few ever manage to step out of the shadows of their parents. Anoushka Shankar, Indian musician born in London, belongs to that group. Unlike her half-sister, the jazz singer Norah Jones, Shankar was not afraid to take up the musical inheritance of their father, Ravi Shankar, even learning from him the instrument that brought him to world acclaim and even influenced the Beatles. Like her father before her, Anoushka Shankar plays the sitar and has long since been considered one of the leading figures of world music. Her albums document on the one hand how deeply rooted she is in classical Indian music; on the other hand, she infuses the music with new, surprising impulses from dance-floor music (»Breathing Under Water«, 2007) or flamenco (»Traveller«, 2011). The many Grammy nominations she has received testify that she is on the right path. Her current album »Traces of You«, produced by the multitalented Nitin Sawhney, is a memorial dedicated to her father, who passed away in December 2012.
