To the highest Peaks

The saying that Alexandra Dovgan was born with a gift for the piano applies to her more than to almost anyone else. Her entire family consists of pianists – and Alexandra has been playing since she was three years old. At the age of twelve, piano legend Grigory Sokolov attested that she was already playing like a fully-fledged adult. Now she has chosen two monumental piano sonatas to showcase her artistic maturity at the Elbphilharmonie.

Ludwig van Beethoven described his Hammerklavier Sonata to his publisher as a »sonata that will give pianists a hard time«. Highly emotional, technically demanding, and breaking all previous boundaries in terms of length and range, the sonata remains to this day a peak that must first be scaled.

Alexandra Dovgan will, however, be warming up with the sonata first: in the second half of the concert, alongside two shorter pieces by Frédéric Chopin, comes Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Sonata, which represents another summit climb for the young pianist. And there is no question about it: she will master both sonata peaks with the seriousness of an experienced climber.
