World Classical Music

Almost all cultures around the world have their own musical traditions – centuries old and each unique. They can be experienced in »World Classical Music«: the origins of the banjo, Kyrgyz epic songs, Lebanese traditions and Serbian two-voice a capella

Description

In other parts of the world, too, there is »classical« music that has developed over centuries, sometimes millennia, into highly refined art forms with distinctive artistic vocabularies. Their significance for cultural identity often extends far beyond the sounds themselves. The »World Classical Music« series brings together four very different examples: the Lebanese trio led by Farah Kaddour on the buzuq takes listeners to the vibrant streets of Beirut with intricate melodies. Rhiannon Giddens explores the African American roots of her instrument, the banjo. The young ensemble Kerbez brings epic songs from the high mountains of Kyrgyzstan to the Elbe River. And the Teofilović twins from Serbia bring the musical landscape of the Balkans to the Recital Hall.
