Contemporary music has played an important role at the Elbphilharmonie from the very beginning. After all, it is a contemporary concert hall, and it needs contemporary sounds. This is where the series »State of the Art« comes in: in this series, a group of prominent musicians present exciting aspects of the works of modern music icons.
The video opera »An Index of Metals« by Italian composer Fausto Romitelli premiered in 2003; it is a »Gesamtkunstwerk«, crossing many borders, and it has quickly achieved cult status. Austrian composer Bernhard Lang, on the other hand, has updated Schubert’s »Winterreise« (Winter Journey) with samples and loops. Electronic music also played an important role for Luigi Nono. He wrote »La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura« for solo violin and eight tape recorders in 1988. It is dedicated to violinist Gideon Kremer who will personally perform it in Hamburg.
The contemporary music world was once revolutionised by Karlheinz Stockhausen and his eleven piano pieces. Exceptional pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard presents them as a state of the art finale.
