There are few musicians whose playing is as radically personal and expressive as the Moldavian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Her delicate, natural appearance conceals a volcanic energy that erupts in her innovative interpretations. Kopatchinskaja’s residency at the Elbphilharmonie Konzerte allows her to present different facets of her art.
The programme naturally includes modern music, which for her is as important »as the air I breathe«. This includes works by the Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya, for example. Even classic pieces such as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, however, can be discovered anew when played by this exciting young musician: »My aim is to shake off the old, tired aspects. Something unpredictable has to happen, something that refreshes the piece and gives the audience a new sensory experience.« Kopatchinskaja indulges in this desire to experiment with her own musical laboratory, the »quartet-lab«, formed together with three other charismatic international soloists. Her version of Ravel’s rhapsody »Tzigane«, which she plays in the opening concert, calls the stylised folk music of her homeland to mind. Patricia Kopatchinskaja’s many fans will be delighted to know that she is also preparing a surprise concert for the Hamburg International Music Festival.
