By the 1960s, if not before, the guitar escaped from its role as the poor relation in the field of jazz, and it spawned a succession of stars such as Wes Montgomery and John McLaughlin. Today, the scene boasts a huge range of interesting guitarists – and some of those are now performing in the »Jazz Guitar« series at the Elbphilharmonie.

The series kicks off with the Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel. Then, as a complete contrast, a concert is put on by Ceramic Dog, the band of the New York jazz and avant-garde guitarist Marc Ribot: explosive, rough music in tightly organised chaos, which can nevertheless sound deep and nuanced.

After the Hungarian Ferenc Snétberger, a master of the nylon-string guitar, a former guitar prodigy comes to the Elbphilharmonie in Julian Lage. With his trio, the American musician switches effortlessly between jazz, rock ’n’ roll, surf and flamenco.
