Social media star hosts weekend in the Elbphilharmonie
23 May 2025: »Professional music fan« Derrick Gee brings music, talks and drinks to the Kaispeicher
Press Information
This season, Derrick Gee is inviting his 1.5 million followers on a digital journey through the Elbphilharmonie as the venue’s very own ›Creator in Residence‹. The Australian social media star offers playful and personal insights on TikTok and Instagram – whether he’s demonstrating how to play the perfect »ting« on the triangle, philosophising about cough sweets at concerts, or immersing himself in the world of classical music with a DJ set in the empty Grand Hall. At the end of the season, his online fans can now experience him live and in person at the Elbphilharmonie on 21 and 22 June. During this special mini festival weekend at the Kaispeicher, Derrick Gee will be presenting his latest favourite records, talking about his time in Hamburg in a live podcast and joining the audience for a drink. His DJ set, with turntables set up on the balcony at the western tip of the concert hall, promises iconic views of the harbour and sunset vibes. The self-proclaimed »professional music fan« has of course invited some of his favourite artists to ›Derrick Gee’s Radio Weekender‹: On Saturday, DJ Amir (Brooklyn, New York) and Bufiman (Düsseldorf) will mix an eclectic blend of rap, jazz, gospel, disco, krautrock and electro into the night. On Sunday, members of Ensemble Resonanz and academy students of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will perform works by Caroline Shaw, Bryce Dessner and Claude Debussy. Sunday afternoon brings a more laid-back flea market feel, as ›Honey Bucket Records‹, a Hamburg vinyl shop, will have a curated vinyl stand featuring some of the records heard during the weekend. Visitors can also try their hand at a modular synthesizer station, showcasing the Elbphilharmonie’s diverse music education programmes. In 2023, the Elbphilharmonie became the first concert hall in the world to appoint a ›Creator in Residence‹. This season’s guest, the social media star Derrick Gee, was hailed by The New Yorker magazine as one of the defining voices of a new generation of style-defining ›content creators‹. Tickets are now available at www.elbphilharmonie.de.
Derrick Gee launched his TikTok channel in early 2022 and quickly gained recognition as a highly regarded voice on music taste, the music industry and hi-fi sound. After studying design at the University of Technology in Sydney, the music connoisseur with the relaxed baritone voice initially worked as a graphic designer and later moved into developing and producing television formats. He started making a name for himself in music from 2012 onwards with the launch of ›Finetooth Radio‹, a weekly online radio show that helped establish his reputation. This led to DJ appearances on acclaimed platforms such as NTS Radio in the UK, the high-end listening bar Spiritland in London’s King’s Cross, and SiriusXM. Meanwhile, a new chapter is unfolding at the Elbphilharmonie: the former catering space in the Kaispeicher building, taken over by the venue in summer 2024, is being transformed. Easily accessible from the Tube, the space is set to become a new and expanded hub for music education. The bar area, located next to the large panoramic window, will be open to concertgoers before and after performances. As part of this transition, the Elbphilharmonie is offering a glimpse into the space’s future with a range of creative pop-up events.
