NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester / Esa-Pekka Salonen

From the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall: the Finnish star conductor and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with works by Richard Strauss and Ravel.

He only recently took up his new job as music director of the renowned San Francisco Symphony Orchestra – and already his next visit to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra is scheduled, an ensemble with which he has a longstanding connection. For the occasion, Finnish star conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has chosen to perform two thoroughly moving pieces of music that promise a intense listening experience, even with a small ensemble.

With his »Metamorphosen« for 23 solo strings, the 80-year-old Richard Strauss gave expression in 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, to his grief over the devastated cultural landscape. Maurice Ravel's ballet »Ma mère l’oye« (Mother Goose) transports us to a different world that many adults have lost touch with: the beloved »poetry of childhood«, as the French composer called it. A work originally written for children, full of fairy-tale colour.
