Technical Details

  • Capacity

In its standard set-up, the hall has a capacity of 2,091 guests. For performances with larger choirs, singers can be accommodated directly behind the stage in Audience Area G, which reduces the audience capacity by 78 seats.

In concerts with smaller instrumentation, the rear part of the stage can be filled with 94 extra seats to form Audience Area H. Performances using a hanging rear wall and a PA system directed from the stage into the audience areas reduce the capacity to approximately 1,555 guests.

  • Stage and Rigging

The stage has 31 electrically operated, height-adjustable platforms that cover the stage area in a semicircle and allow various stage levels, depending on requirements. The total area of the stage is about 260 square metres and the actual playable area measures approximately 18 x 15 m (l x b).

  • Backstage

The backstage area is located at stage level on the 12th floor and includes seven artists’ dressing rooms with private bathrooms as well as a cafeteria that also serves as an artists’ lounge. On the 11th floor is the orchestra area, equipped with four group changing rooms and eight warm-up rooms. Another warm-up room, which can also be used as a production office, is located on the 12th floor.

  • Foyer

Foyer spaces connected to various areas of the Grand Hall contain cloakrooms on the 11th floor and bars on floors 12, 13, 15 and 16. All foyer spaces offer spectacular views of the city of Hamburg to the north and of the port to the south. Concertgoers make their way to the foyer areas via the Elbphilharmonie Plaza.

Recital Hall

The Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie is designed as a multipurpose space. Equipped with a mobile auditorium and stage elements, the space offers a variety of configurations.
