Hamburger Liedertafel / Albert Schweitzer Jugendorchester
200 Years of Choral Music in the Hanseatic City
Hamburg melodies
First, the freedom fighters drove Napoleon’s occupying forces out of northern Germany, then they formed a men’s choir in 1823. Their first choirmaster, the composer Albert Methfessel, brought together Hamburg merchants, professors, lawyers and masons to form the »Hamburger Liedertafel«, which has shaped the cultural life of the Hanseatic city with their concerts and performances over two centuries. Northern Germany’s oldest male choir now celebrates its 200th anniversary with a real fireworks display of Romantic songs, pop tunes and Hamburg melodies, accompanied by friendly choirs and the Albert Schweitzer Jugendorchester.
