Longing for unknown worlds
Instead of the originally planned Bertrand de Billy, the French conductor Alexandre Bloch will take over the direction of the 10th Philharmonic Concert, with which the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra will conclude its 2022/2023 concert season in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. Alexandre Bloch has been Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lille since 2016; from 2015 to 2021 he was also Principal Guest Conductor of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. The change of conductor is accompanied by a programme change: Instead of Richard Strauss’ »Alpensinfonie«, Piotr I. Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony will be played.
The title of the cello concerto already reveals where the work’s poetic aura stems from: »Tout un monde lointain…« – this is the world of Baudelaire, »a distant world, absent, almost extinct« as portayed in his famous volume of verse »Les Fleurs du mal«, which Dutilleux took his inspiration from. The composer placed lines from the book at the beginning of each of the five movements.
