The duo – the most intimate form of improvisation – allows musicians to engage with and respond to each other in a way no other constellation does: every second must be heard, understood and transformed into one’s own performance. Julie Sassoon & Willi Kellers do that in a sensitive, quiet and lyrical way. A magnificent yet concentrated listening experience. Nils Wogram & Joe Sachse are more expressive. They take broad-meshed composition material as a starting point for their musical performance, but this leaves so much scope for playful freedom that one can also speak of improvisation here too. While these two approaches may be different, they are both internally consistent, highly sensitive and collaborative performances by the best improvisers in the German jazz scene.
