Out of the darkness into the light

»As the oars first touched the water, the theme for the introduction to the first movement came to me – and four weeks later I had completed the first, third and fifth movements,« Gustav Mahler noted during his holiday on the Wörthersee in 1905. He had already written the two pieces of »night music« that are the second and fourth movements of his Seventh Symphony the year before. But what sounds so light and airy, redolent of a seaside holiday and balmy summer nights, in no way reflects the complex musical cosmos that this symphony evolves.

The path leading out of the darkness into the light, typical of all Mahler symphonies, unfolds here in a special way: »The Seventh tries with might to overcome his obsession with his own death«, conductor Michael Gielen says. To keep up the suspense here, we need interpreters as excellent as the Vienna Philharmonic and Andris Nelsons, who is known for his intense conducting.
