Ingo Metzmacher back in Hamburg

From 1997 to 2005, Ingo Metzmacher was Hamburg’s General Music Director and a very memorable one at that. During his time in Hamburg, Metzmacher’s brilliant collaboration with director Peter Konwitschny was – and still is – highly regarded. Now Metzmacher returns to the podium in Hamburg – his home for many years – with one of the best orchestras in the world: the Vienna Philharmonic.

The programme focuses entirely on classical modernism. The orchestral works of Anton Webern and Shostakovich frame the focal point of the programme: the first symphony by a composer that effected Metzmacher early on in his career, Karl Amadeus Hartmann. He was more than just a great German composer: »He was the bridge between Gustav Mahler and Wolfgang Rihm, between Alban Berg and Hans Werner Henze!«
