Existential highs and lows

When this literally well-rehearsed team returns to Hamburg, Daniel Barenboim will have been music director of the Staatskapelle Berlin for no less than 30 years. Now the orchestra and its »conductor for life« perform all four Schumann symphonies on two consecutive evenings, as the highlight of a week marking the Elbphilharmonie’s fifth anniversary.

Existential highs and lows clash in the first concert with Schumann’s First and Second symphonies: the Symphony No. 1 in B flat, known as the »Spring Symphony«, is driven by optimism and lyrical power. Or, in the composer’s own words, by »the springtime urge that carries us all away until a ripe old age«. Just three years later, Schumann suffered a physical and nervous breakdown, from which he subsequently recovered with the profound yet life-affirming Symphony No. 2.
