Description

Villages and towns, ports and courts, folk music and refined culture enter into a lively dialogue when Spanish viola da gamba player Fahmi Alqhai brings together flamenco and Baroque music. With his »Songs for Going There and Back Again« he presents a very special repertoire that takes the audience on a journey across the boundaries of continents, eras and styles.

»Cantes de ida y vuelta« is the Spanish description for songs that have been around the world: songs that originated in Spain, then accompanied the Conquistadors to the New World, where they mingled with the music of the American Indians and the slaves before being reimported to Europe to become a fixed ingredient of the »typically Spanish« flamenco. A true melting pot that can no longer be localised to a particular country, and one in which the song genres jácaras, canarios and chaconne joined forces, and at the same time served as the foundation of both folk and art music.

Together with his ensemble Accademia del Piacere, the celebrated flamenco singer Arcángel and the soprano Marivi Blasco, Fahmi Alqhai shows how invigorating it can be to enjoy improvisation and discover the danceable qualities of this music: vivacious, fresh and inspiring.
