Description
The young Richard Strauss strongly believed in an »independent development and progression« of instrumental music after Beethoven, Bruckner and Brahms – probably because he himself was such an eminently talented writer for the orchestra. His solution: so called »tone poems«, each with its own unique form. This path ended abruptly, however, when Strauss decided to redirect his creative energies to the field of opera.
Like Strauss, French composer Emmanuel Chabrier was an avowed Wagnerian. In his own works though, Chabrier preferred a cheekier and more polished comedy style, which made his compositions a success. His Rhapsody España, inspired by a trip to Spain with his wife in 1882, is one of Chabrier’s most popular pieces.
Success and popularity can also be attributed to Unsuk Chin from South Korea. She studied with György Ligeti in Hamburg. Her music combines energy and beauty, virtuosity and experimental aspects. Chin’s work is unique in that she manages to make exotic sounds appear »classical« in a romantic way, giving her avant-garde music a dreamlike and visionary aura.
