Napoleon’s Cultural Legacy

Widely acclaimed as a long-standing authority on historical performances of Baroque music and highly respected for his intelligent choices of concert repertoire, Philippe Herreweghe has boldly combined two particularly striking works for his ProArte concert in Hamburg. On the one hand, Beethoven’s mighty »Eroica« Symphony that reflects the revolutions of the Napoleonic Wars and is thought to have originally been dedicated to Napoleon himself. On the other, the forceful Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini, commissioned by Napoleon’s successor King Louis XVIII. The two works have much in common, not least the undisputed craftsmanship of both composers. They held each other in high regard and Beethoven’s request for Cherubini’s Requiem to be played at his funeral was granted. This concert is pure Napoleonic drama from the Late Classical era, led by an esteemed conductor and played by a world-class ensemble.
