NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester / Chick Corea / Alan Gilbert
NDR chief conductor Alan Gilbert is very fond of combining apparent opposites. This much is clear from the upbeat, summery programme that brings the 2020/21 season to an end, featuring a very special guest, the 22-times-over Grammy awardwinner Chick Corea. The American jazz superstar with a strong affinity for classical music presents his own piano concerto tonight. The work, first performed in 1999, represents the perfect fusion of both worlds: a laid-back mixture of Miles Davis and Stravinsky's »Rite of Spring«.
Corea's top hit »Spain« supplies the motto for the rest of the programme: French composer Maurice Ravel's love of Spain is reflected in numerous works, e.g. in his famous »Boléro«. Dashing rhythms and the clatter of castanets can also be heard in ample measure in »Alborada del gracioso«, while »Capriccio espagnol« betrays the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov, whom Ravel admired for his orchestration skills.
Aaron Copland's ballet score »Appalachian Spring« takes us from flamenco to square dance, and he scored a classic hit here with his variations on the song »Simple Gifts«, better-known under the name »Lord of the Dance«.
