Lament

Teodor Currentzis is something of a rockstar among contemporary conductors. With his undogmatic approach to great classical works, the Greek-born artist always guarantees excitement. Around Easter, he and his musicAeterna ensemble are performing several concerts in the Elbphilharmonie. Unfortunately, because of the war in Ukraine and the resulting travel restrictions, the musicAeterna Choir cannot come to Hamburg, and so the programme has had to be changed. The Saint Petersburg-based multinational orchestra musicAeterna will be joined for this concert by Ukrainian musicians based in Europe. Tickets retain their validity.

Instead of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Richard Strauss’s »Metamorphosen« and Piotr Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony »Pathétique« will now be performed. Strauss composed his poignant, late work for 23 solo strings in 1945, as a lament against the backdrop of the human and cultural devastation that surrounded him by the end of the Second World War. Tchaikovsky’s opulent final symphony is also an account of world-weariness and transience, with its final movement reminiscent of a requiem.
