Familiar shores

Mishka Rushdie Momen’s curiosity knows no bounds. Her musical horizons range from the Renaissance to the present day, and she is just as passionate about solo works as she is about chamber music. For all her enjoyment of discovering new music, there are familiar shores that the London-based pianist returns to again and again. These include the piano works of Franz Schubert, which make up a core part of her repertoire.

His »Piano Sonata in A minor, D 784« is a transitional work where the increasingly self-confident composer breaks free from classical role models like Mozart and Haydn and discovers his own greater freedom of expression. This development begun with his »Sonata in B Major, D 575«, written earlier (1817), and comes to fullness in his »Sonata in D Major, D 850« – one of the few works Schubert published during his lifetime. The popular work owes its nickname to the place it was written, Bad Gastein, where Schubert – not exactly renowned for his healthy lifestyle, stayed for a period of recuperation in 1825.
