»The composer is always right. I am always wrong« – thus Murray Perahia in an interview. With this tongue-in-cheek comment he revealed quite a bit about his own personality: his modesty and equanimity are nothing short of legendary. Perahia has never been a showman, and not even the popular press would dare refer to him as a »keyboard lion« or a »star pianist«.
And yet he is still a star, in his quiet way; a star without airs and graces or amorous adventures to his name, it’s true, but an artist of worldwide fame who has collected quite a few Grammy and ECHO awards over the years. Only recently the New York Times enthused that he didn’t sound like a wise old pianist at all, performing in recital with the impetuosity of a young talent. That gives us something to look forward to at his Hamburg concert!
