Description

Where do the limits of imagination lie? Composers of all ages, including ours, have asked themselves that question – arriving at very different answers. Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello, premiered in 1918, is never missing from lists of the most important cello works. There are several reasons for that: Kodály’s original ideas amaze with their tremendous expressivity, folk-like motifs, soaring virtuosity and a great feel for the instrument. Is there another work for cello in which the soloist is presented with such a varied and comprehensive challenge in terms of instrumental ability? The reward is the heights of listening pleasure – surprising, sometimes challenging and often astonishing.
