Baltic sounds

She is the Elbphilharmonie’s titular organist, and she comes from Latvia: Iveta Apkalna likes to combine these two things and be an ambassador for the music and organ culture of her home country. And this is more varied than the size of the little Baltic state would lead one to believe. It goes without saying that Ms Apkalna regularly includes works by Latvian composers in her recital programmes, and tonight she is dedicating an entire concert to the different facets of Latvian organ music from the Late Romantic to the present day. In that context, she highlights the work of female composers, who are rarely given the attention they deserve, not only in Latvia. So it is only logical that she plays music by Lūcija Garūta and Maija Einfelde as well as a new piece by Linda Leimane.
