Description

»Panta rhei«, »everything flows« – this is how Heraclitus put it around 2,500 years ago. For art, this saying can be confidently understood as an invitation to never draw boundaries too narrowly, to avoid thinking in the infamous boxes, and to always allow for new perspectives on the seemingly familiar. For here too, everything is in flux, everything in motion, everything somehow connected.

In their second »Multitudes« program, the Hamburg Camerata, together with Sergey Malov, follows this very principle in tracing the music of Franz Schubert. Often dismissed as a Biedermeier-era »Liederfürst», the diversity of his oeuvre is still underestimated today. As an arranger, Malov adds a new interpretation to the various performance traditions of the »Arpeggione« Sonata with his shoulder cello. He draws out unexpected dimensions from the songs of »Winterreise« – without using a single word. Even the highly dramatic, anything-but-Biedermeier string quartet »Death and the Maiden« appears in a new light under his direction. Finally, with the piece »Wie der alte Leiermann Man« by Ukrainian composer Leonid Desyatnikov, he demonstrates that the »Schubert river« is far from running dry in our present day…
