Escape into fantasy

In vain does the mermaid dream of her prince in Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairytale; in vain did Alexander Zemlinsky seek to liberate himself from his hopeless love for Alma Mahler. The unsuccessful wooing of the composer is reflected in this colourful, late-romantic phantasy for large orchestra, mixing imagination and reality.
