In good tradition

As titular organist of the church of St. Sulpice in Paris, Daniel Roth is a successor to such illustrious names as Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré. Roth is in charge of one of the most famous instruments made by the legendary 19th century French organ builder Cavaillé-Coll. So much tradition brings an obligation with it, as the programme of Roth’s Elbphilharmonie recital shows: he performs works by Camille Saint-Saëns and César Franck among others.

From Franck’s pen we hear the impressive and unconventional Symphony in D minor in an arrangement by Daniel Roth himself. The recital opens with three smaller pieces by Saint-Saëns – 2021 marked the 100th anniversary of his death –, and between these and the Franck, Roth plays some movements from his own Magnificat, and of course music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
