Love at Second Sight

»I especially love the Elgar concerto,« Sol Gabetta confessed in an interview in 2023. The colors, the lyricism – the wit and vitality that keep flashing up unexpectedly: for the star cellist, everything simply falls into place here. Yet the work had a decidedly rocky start in its musical life. A poorly rehearsed premiere in 1919 damaged its reputation, which was only spectacularly restored in 1965 by the very young cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Incidentally, Elgar’s Cello Concerto shares this fate of success »at the second attempt« with the other major work on the Czech Philharmonic’s programme: Igor Stravinsky’s »The Rite of Spring« also caused a resounding scandal at its ballet premiere before going on to conquer concert stages around the world.
