The Elbphilharmonie in Beijing

The National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is the Elbphilharmonie of Beijing, so to speak. Opened in 2007, the spectacular building comprises an opera house, a concert hall and a theater. It is home to the NCPA Orchestra, one of China’s best orchestras for Western European classical music. Together with the South Korean star conductor Myung-Whun Chung and the high-flyer Bruce Liu on the piano, it is now paying a visit to Hamburg.

Naturally, they are also bringing a calling card from China: »The Five Elements« by Qigang Chen. The last pupil of the important French composer Olivier Messiaen combines traditional Chinese and advanced classical music. He became known to a worldwide audience through his contributions to the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Maurice Ravel was also a wanderer between worlds. The Frenchman was a co-founder of musical impressionism, but was also introduced to jazz by George Gershwin. Both influences can be heard in his piano concerto. Bruce Liu is a true high-flyer at the keys. Born in Paris in 1997 and raised in Montreal, Canada, he won the prestigious Chopin Competition in 2021. Deutsche Grammophon immediately signed him. NDR Kultur called his first album with works by Maurice Ravel »an event in every respect«.

The album concludes with a best-of of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet music to Shakespeare’s »Romeo and Juliet«. Prokofiev, also a Frenchman by choice for a time, set what is probably the most famous love story in the world to gripping music – the most famous of which is probably the sombre »Dance of the Knights«, which introduces the feuding Montague and Capulet families and heralds their ominous fate.
