Description

Hailing from Hamburg’s partner city on Lake Michigan, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra crosses the pond to become the first visiting orchestra ever to perform in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. And not just once, but twice, with two different music programmes.

From the electrifying to the delicate, from the furious to the sophisticated, from the brilliant to the poetic – this dream team pulls out all the stops with the orchestral classics. In this concert, concertgoers can look forward to »Pictures of an Exhibition«. Mussorgsky was inspired to compose this now popular work following a visit to an art exhibition. With a colourful orchestration by Maurice Ravel, this is the perfect piece to test out the acoustics of the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall.

The concert kicks off with a distinguished piece of concert music originally composed by Paul Hindemith for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Riccardo Muti, who takes the baton on both evenings, represents a long and magnificent tradition. A student of Herbert von Karajan, this charismatic Italian maestro names Arturo Toscanini as his role model and has been at the helm of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2010.
