Description

This concert brings two of the most successful soloists of their generation together under one roof. Violinist Julia Fischer and cellist Daniel Müller-Schott were both born in Munich; now they are accompanied by one of that city’s top orchestras on their visit to Hamburg: the Bavarian State Orchestra under Kirill Petrenko. Petrenko, who has already made a name for himself as an opera conductor in Berlin, will take over the baton as principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from  Sir Simon Rattle – one of the most sought-after positions in the classical music scene.

Julia Fischer studied under the legendary violin teacher Ana Chumachenko, while Daniel Müller-Schott was trained by master cellists Steven Isserlis and Heinrich Schiff. For their joint appearance, the two soloists have chosen Brahms’s Concerto for Violin, Cello & Orchestra; this is one of the rare double concertos of the Late Romantic period, and was once praised by Clara Schumann as »a highly interesting and intelligent composition«.

The second work of the evening, Tchaikovsky’s »Manfred« Symphony, is based on the dramatic poem of the same name by the English poet Lord Byron. Tchaikovsky himself described it as his »best symphony«.
