Singing the Praises of Bach

Thank goodness for Mendelssohn! If he hadn’t lifted Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion out of obscurity where it had lain untouched for almost a century since first being performed in the 1720s, this epic and unique oratorio would never have become a major sacred work in today’s repertoire of ecclesiastical music. Young Mendelssohn was only twenty years old when he successfully initiated a resounding revival of Bach’s music that has flourished until the present day. For Bach enthusiasts, the St Matthew Passion is a key work. Ever since Mendelssohn recognised its potential in 1829, the dramatic density, intricate structure and powerful musical narrative of this Easter classic have continued to fascinate audiences and musicians alike. At the Elbphilharmonie, it will be in the capable hands of an experienced team of Bach specialists as Philippe Herreweghe conducts the Collegium Vocale Gent in what promises to be a moving and memorable performance.
