Two violins, one viola and a cello – the ingredients are relatively simple. Yet they were enough to create the most important genre of chamber music: the string quartet. Over the centuries, it has served composers equally as a laboratory for musical innovation and as a means of expressing the most profound emotions.

This newly launched series is dedicated to the supreme discipline of chamber music and is inviting some of the best ensembles (back) to Hamburg: the Belcea Quartet, with its splendid culture of sound, and the Hagen Quartet, an ensemble with decades of experience and a willingness to flaunt conventions.

They are framed by two representatives of the younger generation: the dynamic young members of Poland’s Apollon Musagète Quartet and the fantastically versatile – yet always stylistically flawless – Quatuor Ebène, who have the honour of opening the series in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall.
