Anyone who learned to play the piano as children certainly remembers – probably with a shudder – Carl Czerny’s »School of Velocity«. Intended to increase speed and improve technique, these études are pure torture for the fingers! Amazingly, pianists exist who are not only willing, but also eager to perform such difficult practice pieces – as well as composers who are ambitious enough to write virtuosic and highly original works for these extraordinary enthusiasts.

Since the time of Chopin, electrifying miniature concerts have emerged that feature bold technical showpieces and sound experiments. In this fittingly titled series »Pianomania«, four excellent pianists pit themselves against the immense challenge of the literature.

Cédric Tiberghien masters Debussy and Szymanowski, Kirill Gerstein performs Ligeti and jazz – nimble fingers are required even here! Things get romantic when Hamburg’s »local hero« Alexander Krichel takes on Chopin and Schumann, while Boris Giltburg’s Russian programme with breathtaking concert études by Alexander Skrjabin finishes the series.
