Exploring the foundations of human existence beyond the explicable physical world – this spiritual need expressed itself particularly strongly in Romanticism. No wonder, then, that the lied was discovered to be the ideal form of expression in this era. Schubert’s lieder, for example, »express the inexpressible in a forceful way«, according to the great British tenor Ian Bostridge, who rounds off the »Lieder Recitals« cycle with Schubert’s »Schwanen-gesang«, one of the composer’s last works.

Apart from the wonderful repertoire, a lieder recital also offers the chance to experience charismatic singers such as Jonas Kaufmann, Christiane Karg, Georg Nigl and Piotr Beczała in an intimate setting, rather than on the operatic stage.

Often overlooked or regarded as mere accessories, pianists play a vital role. Helmut Deutsch demonstrates how much the art of classical song is animated by the inspirational counterpart at the piano. As one of the most renowned lied accompanists of our times, he appears here – alongside more prominent colleagues – as a secret artist in residence.
