As nebulous as the term »classical music« may be, in Western culture everyone tends to associate it with the same things: Mozart, string quartets, opera, etc. But we often overlook the fact that other peoples and cultures in other periods and on other continents have also produced their own serious music: sophisticated art music that – whether laid down on paper or passed on orally over centuries – has created its own aesthetic cosmos.

The »World Classical Music« series brings these »other« musical traditions to Hamburg. Not in the form of seminars at the Ethnological Museum, but as spectacular, vibrant concerts.

The series kicks off with the sounds of the Indian string instrument sarangi, followed by the guqin, a Chinese zither which plays a similar role in Far Eastern music to that of the harp in the West. Finally, we hear the music of Syria, a cultural region under a serious and pressing threat.
