Is jazz the new classical music? Nowadays, jazz artists give concerts of the highest standard at sophisticated venues for an extremely knowledgeable audience. And yet jazz remains one of the most innovative of music genres, one which quickly absorbs influences from all other areas and translates them into its own language. The concert series »Jazz Piano« unites both of these aspects. For example, Gonzalo Rubalcaba views the piano more as »part of the percussion family«. His pieces thrive on the rhythmic fire of his home country. The fire of salsa music also burns in the heart of his fellow countryman, Omar Sosa, who began on the marimba and has already performed with the NDR Bigband. Japan’s Hiromi, elfish and light-footed, ignores all musical boundaries and frolics towards jazz-rock-fusion, whereas for Zurich’s Stefan Rusconi, rock music is the most important source of inspiration. Rounding off the current selection of »Jazz Piano« artists, and representing Germany in this illustrious series is Florian Weber, who studied at Berklee, famous as a training ground for jazz talent. In cooperation with Karsten Jahnke Konzertdirektion. Presented by NDR Info.
