Many conservative music lovers regarded the first appearances by jazz musicians on the stages of classical concert halls in 1940s USA as a scandal. The genre that obeys no rules, the music to which people danced in disreputable jazz cellars – now played in the nation’s hallowed concert halls? A travesty! But the music caught on, and the »Jazz at the Philharmonic« concept soon developed into a major attraction across the US and beyond.

Jazz is also an integral part of the programme at the Elbphilharmonie. The »Jazz at the Phil« series brings young stars of the future to the Grand Hall such as the American singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, local heroes with an international aura like the Tingvall Trio, and true legends such as the two Cuban pianists Chucho Valdés and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. The series is brought to a close by the innovative Israeli bass pioneer Avishai Cohen.
