Estonian Festival Orchestra / Hans Christian Aavik / Midori / Paavo Järvi
Pärt: Tabula rasa, Fratres, La Sindone, Collage sur B-A-C-H and other works
Repertoire treasures in a star line-up – the Connoisseurs’ Subscription combines Hans Werner Henze’s impressive Ninth Symphony, a concerto for sound magician Arvo Pärt, the opulence of Olivier Messiaen and noise experiments by Helmut Lachenmann
He has grown into a household name over the years: Arvo Pärt, one of the most frequently performed composers of our time. To mark his 90th birthday, Paavo Järvi and the Estonian Festival Orchestra – authorities on Pärt’s music – are dedicating an entire evening to him. Typical of this subscription series, which brings together some very special concerts: sound experiments from Helmut Lachenmann that get under your skin, or Olivier Messiaen’s intoxicatingly splendid colours. In the last concert of the series, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra honours the important German composer Hans Werner Henze on the occasion of his 100th birthday. In his Ninth Symphony, he tells a powerful story of resistance against the Nazi regime.
