»Playing the piano requires common sense, heart and technique«, Vladimir Horowitz once said. »Without common sense you are a fiasco, without technique an amateur, and without heart a machine.« So any player who possesses all of these qualities can surely and confidently be called a »master pianist«.

Two living piano legends will be honouring us with their presence this season: Maurizio Pollini, who has not appeared in Hamburg since 2007, and Grigory Sokolov, whose solo evenings »are among the best things the classical music scene has to offer« (Der Spiegel). Furthermore, the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, the spirited Khatia Buniatishvili, Daniil Trifonov and Kit Armstrong, whom Alfred Brendel called a »monumental musician in the making«, are also all on their way to achieving said master status. Finally, Yuja Wang’s trade mark is her practically superhuman fine motor skills, whilst David Fray, presenting a programme of Beethoven after his success with Bach and Schubert, is a master of subtlety and refinement.
